Horsley Witten Group is seeking a full-time Environmental Scientist to join our team of enthusiastic professionals to provide wetlands and permitting support for a wide range of technical projects for our New England public and private sector clients. We support a hybrid work model (in office and work from home) and this role can be based in any of our New England offices. Annual salary is $80,000-$120,000. Actual salary will vary depending on experience, skills, and internal equity.

- Organize and prepare for public meetings, and attend occasional evening meetings and hearings, including facilitation of activities designed to solicit input
- Take excellent meeting notes
- Manage work for multiple deadlines simultaneously
- Report writing and organizational skills and ability to work independently
- Strong research, writing, and data analysis skills
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite
- Periodically perform duties in physically challenging outdoor situations in all types of weather on a regular basis
- Perform field assessments related to natural resource surveys, including, but not limited to, inland and coastal resource area delineation according to the US Army Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual and Regional Supplement, and the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act Regulations, including plant species identification, soil characterization, wetland delineation; wildlife habitat surveys; rare species surveys; GPS data collection; and related field work activities
- Identify and describe wildlife, habitats, and ecological communities and prepare clear, well-organized technical reports and other written deliverables; writing samples may be requested
- Work alongside experienced engineers, landscape architects, scientists, and planners to support project design teams
- Demonstrate good communication and time management skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment
- Communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, clients, and regulatory agencies to develop practical permitting strategies
- Represent clients before Conservation Commissions and other permitting authorities at public hearings
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum B.S. in wetland science, biology, plant/soil science, wildlife biology, ecology, or other related environmental science
- Between three to five years of direct field experience in inland and coastal resource area delineation and wildlife habitat surveys and related state (e.g., MA, MEPA, Ch. 91, WQC; RI, NH) and federal wetlands permitting experience
- Have a valid driver’s license, access to an automobile, and willingness to travel out-of-state from time to time
Other Desirable (not required) Qualifications:
- Experience as a consultant
- Certification as a Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or Wetland Scientist in Training (WPIT)
- Experience with GPS field data collection
- Master’s Degree from an accredited (or otherwise accomplished) university planning program
- Experience with ArcGIS
