DeBerry-Swan school
engineering services
The City of Springfield voted to consolidate two neighborhood elementary schools into a three-story, 155,000 square foot building with state-of-the-art programming that serves 800 K-12 students and 120 pre-K students. The new DeBerry-Swan Elementary School is located on Union Street on a 5.9-acre parcel. The community continued to use the original school building while construction for the new school occurred. HW provided civil engineering services working with DiNisco Design Architects and Brown & Sardina Landscape Architects. Our staff conducted a feasibility study as part of the planning process. For the preferred location, we supported the project from conceptual design through construction incorporating stormwater management and utility connections.
The stormwater design features three large subsurface infiltration systems designed to manage rainwater onsite. We prepared plans and design calculations for permitting cost estimating, design development, and construction. Construction of the new school building began in the spring of 2021 and students were welcomed into the new building in September 2023.
